And then there is using everything.

As you probably already know, the University is currently undertaking a massive project in self-examination, in its strategic planning process. The process determines who we are, who we want to be, and how we get there.

One of the important parts of this is determining how we use the resources on and around campus, and this work is done by the Committee on Reimagining the Brown Campus and Community. Your GSC representative on this committee is currently Matt Lyddon.

The committee has launched an anonymous, map-based survey to determine how we interact with the neighborhood. It's actually kind of fun--I said my piece about the culinary ... situation that is Thayer--and it doesn't take much time. I put down over fifty markers on my map, and wrote a fair amount of notes for many of them--it took me 22 minutes. You could probably cut that down to 10 minutes.

If you're a graduate student at Brown, this is a great opportunity to make your needs heard:

  • Which classrooms don't work for you?
  • Where do you park, and is there enough space?
  • What study spaces do you use, and are they adequate?

A high graduate student response rate will give your representatives firmer ground to stand on when asking for more and better space. Please fill the survey out!

And when you're done, you can see the survey's output, filtered for different user types. For instance, this map is filtered simply for student respondents:

  1. This is awesome! Wish they gathered info about public transit usage though. I use the bus more than I use a car to get to campus.

  2. Agreed, there are some categories that have been left out. It probably came down to a question of striking a balance between making the interface noisy and representing all the different important metrics, and that got squeezed out.

Indeed, we brought up public transportation & shuttle issues with some trustees last night; and we will make sure that this shortcoming in the output data is noted in the review meetings we're included in.
