The Brown Graduate Student Council is excited to announce Janet Peters, Program Coordinator at Brown's Writing Center and Writing Fellows Program, as the winner of the 2013 Wilson Deblois Award for exceptional service to graduate students and the graduate school.
The Wilson DeBlois Award is conferred every year on "an individual who has made outstanding contributions to graduate students and the graduate school." This award is named in honor of George Grafton Wilson and Austen K. DeBlois, recipients of Brown’s first Doctor of Philosophy degrees in 1889. It is conferred by the GSC to express the appreciation of the Brown graduate student community for work above and beyond the recipient's job description, which demonstrates the recipient’s dedication and commitment to graduate students at Brown.
Janet Peters was selected by the GSC's Nominations Committee, after receiving and reviewing nominations submitted by Brown graduate students. The initial nomination received by the Nominations Committee cites Peters' "extraordinary commitment to ensuring the well-being of the graduate students who work in the Writing Center" and her motivational leadership, which "makes her associates want to do their best work at the center, because she herself is clearly so above-and-beyond committed to her position." Graduate students working at the Writing Center and those who have need of the Center's services all benefit from Peters' dedication and attention to student needs, making her a worthy recipient of this year's Wilson-DeBlois Award.
Hats of to Janet Peters and the Writing Center!
The award will be officially conferred by GSC President Matt Lyddon during the Graduate School Commencement Ceremony which takes place on Sunday, May 26 on the Ruth J. Simmons quad. See you all there!
